Mal secco disease of Citrus - Phoma tracheiphila

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Mal secco disease is a vascular pathogen causing serious damage and death to the host, particularly lemon, in Citrus and related genera, in Mediterranean countries and the Black Sea region. So far, however, it is unknown in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, as well as other major Citrus-growing regions of the world. Symptoms include red strands visible in stem xylem as well as veinal chlorosis, wilt and shedding of leaves, dieback of twigs and branches. Infection us through stomata and wounds. The causal organism, Phoma tracheiphila, is a conidial fungus. Once in the orchard, the fungus can be carried as spores from pycnidia and from hyphae on the plant and on fallen debris by rain, wind and irrigation water, and perhaps by birds and insects. Of concern to many international plant protection organizations, P. tracheiphila must be prevented from being spread in infected propagative material.

E TENSION Diseases of Citrus in Arizona Revised 08 / 11 AZ 1154

Although citrus is indigenous to southeast Asia, oranges were first planted commercially in central Arizona in the late 1800s. Today commercial production is centered in several warm and low-frost-risk areas of central and southwestern Arizona. A great number of citrus varieties are also widely planted in home gardens. Many diseases of citrus have been described world wide and have colorful and...

Floral transmission of Erwinia tracheiphila by cucumber beetles in a wild Cucurbita pepo.

Cucumber beetles, Acalymma vittatum (F.) and Diabrotica undecipunctata howardi (Barber), are specialist herbivores of cucurbits and the vector of Erwinia tracheiphila (E.F. Smith) Holland, the causative agent of wilt disease. Cucumber beetles transmit E. tracheiphila when infected frass falls onto leaf wounds at the site of beetle feeding. We show that E. tracheiphila also can be transmitted vi...

Disease Interactions in a Shared Host Plant: Effects of Pre-Existing Viral Infection on Cucurbit Plant Defense Responses and Resistance to Bacterial Wilt Disease

Both biotic and abiotic stressors can elicit broad-spectrum plant resistance against subsequent pathogen challenges. However, we currently have little understanding of how such effects influence broader aspects of disease ecology and epidemiology in natural environments where plants interact with multiple antagonists simultaneously. In previous work, we have shown that healthy wild gourd plants...

Serological Estimates of the Seasonal Dynamics of Erwinia tracheiphila in Acalymma vittata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

Serological assays were used to estimate the proportion of Acalymma vittata (F.) that harbored Erwinia tracheiphila (E. F. Smith) Holland, the causal agent of bacterial wilt in cucurbits. Theseproportionswere related to theproportionofA. vittata that transmitteddisease in singlebeetle caged bioassays. The serological assays classiÞed beetles as harboring the bacteria when the titer was above '1...

Dynamics of short- and long-term association between a bacterial plant pathogen and its arthropod vector

The dynamics of association between pathogens and vectors can strongly influence epidemiology. It has been proposed that wilt disease epidemics in cucurbit populations are sustained by persistent colonization of beetle vectors (Acalymma vittatum) by the bacterial phytopathogen Erwinia tracheiphila. We developed a qPCR method to quantify E. tracheiphila in whole beetles and frass and used it to ...
